Artist Biography

Abraham Onkst (b. 2000) is a painter who was raised in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and lives and works in nearby Altoona. 

His practice began at twelve; Onkst had an early fascination with videos of graffiti writers in distant cities. From there, he began drawing his classmates' names in stylized lettering and sold the drawings for ten dollars apiece. At thirteen, on a first visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he stood before Jackson Pollock's Autumn Rhythm; its scale and conviction turned the name-writing impulse toward canvas.

Over the following decade, Onkst built those beginnings into a sustained language of script-like abstraction. Working in acrylic on canvas, he layers, obscures, scrapes, pours, and marks in repeated cycles, each layer carrying the energy of those beneath it, so that earlier gestures and decisions resurface across the finished work. 

In an increasingly digitized culture, Onkst insists on the material fact of painting — surfaces with weight, texture, and a life of their own. He composes his paintings as allover fields of looping, letter-like marks: glyphs descended from name-writing but released from legibility, an invented alphabet in which words, dates, and symbols surface and dissolve as the viewer moves between distance and detail. 

The work grows out of abstract expressionism — Pollock's drip paintings, Lee Krasner's Little Image works — and carries that tradition into the present. The paintings turn the overload of modern life into something worth standing still for. 

Recent canvases introduce more overt structure, from the black-and-white POLARITY works to United We Stand (2026), which resolves thousands of glyphs into the image of the American flag.

Onkst earned a B.A. in Visual Art Studies from the Pennsylvania State University in 2023, paying his way through college by selling his paintings. 

He has exhibited at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art Biennial and the California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica (both 2023), and presented Synthetic World, a solo exhibition at the Community Arts Center of Cambria County (2024). In 2026, the traveling exhibition Our Flag in American Art (1935–2026) is carrying his work from Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples to the Museum of Art – DeLand, with Polk State College Gallery to follow. 

He works with Trimper Gallery, Greenwich, Connecticut, and Harmon-Meek Gallery, where he is the youngest artist on the roster; his paintings are held in private collections across the United States and abroad.
